Foster accounting grad receives top honor for CPA exam performance

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has honored Bryan Dean, a 2007 graduate of the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business, with its Elijah Watt Sells Award, honoring outstanding performance on the Uniform CPA Examination. The award is granted annually to the ten candidates who both pass all four sections of the rigorous licensing exam on their first attempt and post the highest cumulative scores.

Too much information? UW study shows overreliance on 'unfiltered' financial reports reduces inexperienced investors' returns

Frank Hodge, accounting associate professor at the University of Washington's Foster School of Business, and colleagues surveyed 414 non-professional investors to examine their relative use of unfiltered versus analyst-filtered information. One of the first studies to examine the relationship between investors' information choices and their returns, the results linked investors' portfolio returns to their years of investing experience.

UW Foster School celebrates capital campaign success

Today the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business announced it raised $180.5 million in Campaign UW: Creating Futures, which ended June 30th. The number of endowed student support funds – scholarships and fellowships – created in the campaign surpassed the total accumulated in Foster’s prior 83-year history. And endowed faculty positions doubled to more than 60.

Foster MBAs place second in world at International Venture Capital Investment Competition

A team of MBA students at the University of Washington's Michael G. Foster School of Business took second place in the International Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) April 17-19 at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler School of Business. The Foster MBA team beat rivals from University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), University of California Los Angeles (Anderson) and Manchester Business School, while mounting a strong challenge to the first-place team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan).

Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition moves social responsibility to the bottom line

The fourth annual University of Washington Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) took place at the Michael G. Foster School of Business February 25 - 29. First place with an award of $5,000 went to KAITE, a German and Zimbabwe organization that farms, harvests and sells organic oils and herbs. UW's Foster School team came in second with an award of $2,500 for their Rabuor Sunflower Farm business plan to help Kenyans move out of poverty via producing and selling sunflower oil.

UW PhD student awarded $25,000 Deloitte fellowship grant

Elizabeth C. Chuk, a University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business accounting PhD candidate, was recently awarded a $25,000 fellowship grant from the Deloitte Foundation. Chuk is one of 10 recipients of the non-profit organization's Doctoral Fellowship Program, which awarded a total of $250,000 in 2008.

Washington minority business owners are optimistic; UW survey points to growth

Minority small-business owners in Washington voiced increased optimism about their prospects—even amidst the threat of recession—during the last half of 2007.  Minority business owners in the survey cited significant increases in quarterly sales and profits, and 30 percent of businesses surveyed expected to hire new employees within three months.

UW honors major donation by naming PACCAR Hall

Many have argued that ethical behavior is the result of simple judgments between right and wrong. UW Names Business School to Honor Michael G. Foster

Emmert announced today that the UW Business School is being renamed in recognition of gifts from The Foster Foundation totaling $50 million, with $46.5 million made during Campaign UW: Creating Futures. The School will be called the Michael G. Foster School of Business, subject to approval by the UW Board of Regents at its regularly scheduled meeting Sept. 20.

Washington's minority businesses guardedly optimistic despite hurdles

They found that minority business owners in the state are, much like entrepreneurs across the country, confident about their abilities to succeed despite the fact that fewer than one-third of them feel the state's business climate is supportive.

UW to offer undergraduate exchange program with Peking University

The University of Washington Business School and the Guanghua School of Management of Peking University have joined forces to offer an exchange program for undergraduates, Dean James Jiambalvo announced today. Professor Weiying Zhang, Dean of Beijing’s Guanghua School of Management, was in Seattle to officially sign an agreement with the UW that will allow business majors the chance to study in Beijing and Seattle beginning next year.

Rising entrepreneurs present diverse business plans at UW competition

Business school students from Washington universities will present their concepts in this exhibition-style session to 150 judges comprised of angel investors, entrepreneurs, lawyers and venture capitalists. Each judge will have $1,000 in faux dollars to invest in what they consider are the most promising companies. Fifteen of the 31 teams will be eliminated after this investment round.

Danes win Global Business Case Competition

The Copenhagen Business School has won the ninth annual UW Global Business Case Competition, held in April on the University of Washington campus.

This year’s edition drew 64 undergraduate students from top business schools in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore and the United States. A team comprised of students from Brazil, Denmark, Singapore and the United States also competed, and reached the final four, along with the National University of Singapore and Concordia University.

Accounting undergrads win Deloitte National Case Competition

A team of accounting students from the UW Business School has won the Deloitte National Case Competition.

At the national final last weekend in Scottsdale, Ariz., the UW team of Joe DeVleming, Andrew Holland, Roya Labib and David Myre topped the competition from USC, Florida A&M University, the University of Houston, Miami (Ohio) University and Michigan State University. All had advanced to the national final by winning preliminary regional competitions around the United States last fall.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has named two UW Business School faculty members to its new seven-member Financial Accounting Standards Research Initiative (FASRI). Shiva Rajgopal, the Herbert Whitten Professor of Accounting, has joined the initiative’s survey research team. Frank Hodge, an assistant professor of accounting and a Lane A. Daley Faculty Fellow, has joined the experimental research team.

The University of Washington Business School announced today the gift of $1.5 million from Robert J. Herbold, managing director of Herbold Group, LLC, to establish an endowed professorship in entrepreneurship and a venture creation laboratory within the school's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

J. Gary Shansby, co-founder and chairman of TSG Consumer Partners and a graduate of the University of Washington Business School, has given $1 million to establish the J.Gary Shansby Endowed Chair in Marketing Strategy and $5 million to support the school's construction of a new facility.
