Global Biz Week 
 
The Global Business Center is celebrating International Education Week by hosting Global Biz Week at the Foster School. The week of November 16 - 20, 2009 will offer a variety of events for Foster School undergraduates, MBAs, faculty, and staff. This week is made possible in part by the federal Centers for International Business Education and Research program.

Monday, November 16 IKEA International Case Competition

Come cheer on our undergraduate Foster teams at our annual IKEA International Case Competition. This year, each team is joined by an underclassmen Research Associate who is just starting out at the Foster School.
Monday, November 16 Global Business Forum
Balmer 413, 12:30 - 1:20 pm
Speaker: Jim Murphy, Sr. VP of International Operations, Costco
Jim Murphy will discuss Costco’s experience in establishing stores in Europe.  Costco “stuck its toe in the water” by opening multiple stores in the UK and considers that a springboard to  the larger Continental market.  Though the countries are very different, there are enough similarities to draw upon and apply  the UK experience to other markets within Europe.  Costco is now in the process of moving into France.  MBAs, graduate students from other UW departments, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate.

Wednesday, November 18  A Conversation with CEO & Chairman of the Japanese Orix Company
BAEEC, Douglas Forum, 4:00 – 5: 00 pm
In conjunction with Global Biz Week, the Global Business Center is hosting a video conference with Yoshihiko Miyauchi, the Chairman and CEO of the Orix company in Japan. This video conference is part of the MBA course, MGMT 544: Managing Across Cultures. Foster School undergraduates and MBAs are invited to join these MBA students in their case study of the Orix Company.  In advance of the videoconference, each registered student will receive a copy of the case. During the videoconference, studnets will hear from Mr. Miyuchi about how his company dealt with the case along with his insights on managing across cultures.  Mr. Miyauchi is a proud Foster School Alum and received his MBA from UW in 1969.

Wednesday, November 18 Global Social: South America

The Global Social series is a networking event run every 3rd Wednesday by Global Washington.  November’s social is co-hosted with the Global Business Center and will focus on South America. Join us to network with members from small and large non-profits, educational institutions, philanthropy and businesses who all share something in common: our passion for South America.  This informal gathering will provide the opportunity for attendees to share experiences and ideas and to connect with others who are actively working in South America.
COST: $10 Global Washington Members, $15 for non-members (payable by cash or check at the door)

SeaMo hosts Vittana, the Seattle-based microfinance organization that is bringing student loans to the developing world through the power of person-to-person microfinance. Vittana CEO, Kushal Chakrabarti will be talking about “Education Microfinance: A New Generation of Borrowers.” The Global Business Center at UW's Foster School of Business is sponsoring this event.  Suggested Donation of $5

Thursday, November 19  Global Fair Trade Marketplace
HUB 1st Floor Lounge, 11:30 – 2:00 pm
Want a shopping experience that makes a positive impact in the lives of people half a world away? The Social Entrepreneurship Club, HBSA, MUSH, and other business and non-business clubs will bring 15 fair trade and community development retailers to campus to sell their goods in the Global Fair Trade Marketplace. Browse products from all over the world, including textiles, art, coffee, chocolate, and accessories. Some of the best holiday shopping in Seattle will be on UW's campus.

The following organizations have already confirmed their attendance: Krochet Kids, Beads for LIfe, Ten Thousand Villages, Theo Chocolate, Far East Handicrafts, El Quetzal Project, SOL Fair Trade, Karisma Ltd., Baskets of Cambodia, Market Street Traders, and Trabant Coffee and Chai.
