"If the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) becomes reality by 2005, as projected, many new opportunities will open up for U.S. businesses in our hemisphere. However, the FTAA is unlikely to be implemented in the foreseeable future if the U.S. continues to maintain its trade barriers against Latin American products such as food, textiles and steel."
