Classroom Speaking Opportunities
Classroom Speaking Opportunities
In addition to textbook readings and handouts, Retail Management students gain valuable insight into the industry when speakers come into the classroom.
Presentations usually focus on a subject matter that is part of course plan. Instructors may have a speaker address the issue students are studying and inform the student of how their company deals with it. Another method is by the use of a "case study". The retailer is asked to prepare a short handout of a situation they are confronted with. The students receive that handout a week or so before the speaker's arrival. Then, when the speaker comes to class, the students present their ideas on how the problem could be solved. A discussion of proposed solutions ensues in which the various strategies are evaluated.
Every time a speaker comes to class students also learn about that visiting retailer, its history, corporate culture and philosophy of doing business.
Exposure to students in a non-recruiting atmosphere often leads to valuable connections for the company and provides the students future employment opportunities.
